August
25, 2010 (just made several additions/changes/corrections and will be back to
check other sites soon)
I am not going to try to make this a comprehensive resource, because there are a few web sites listed here which have far more science fiction-related links than I could ever hope to coherently assemble. But I do have a bunch of additional interesting and useful sites listed that I have come across, some of which are not listed on the reference sites I mentioned. But to get loads of info about science fiction, check out (I'll do this alphabetically because the sites are all great):
SciFinal at http://www.scifinal.com/
"lists indie sci-fi web series. We currently have over 150 listed and
are adding more and more every day. We also have interviews with creator's and
are adding more original content and features. "
Sci-Fi Web Series at http://scifiwebseries.com/
The site contains no advertisements and is the most complete site for Web Based
Sci-Fi Series. It also contains a forum for fans to comment and vote on the
shows they've viewed.
The SF Site at http://www.sfsite.com is a superb site with pages with information and reviews on authors, books, magazines, movies, television and video, as well as a search engine. New Fiction sister site: Fiction Home offers the Best in SF and Fantasy Magazines. This is a "must-visit" to check out contents, reviews, and info on today's magazines.
"The Ultimate Science Fiction Web Guide" at http://www.magicdragon.com/UltimateSF/SF-Index.html also has a huge range of information on all aspects of science fiction, and there is also lots of other genre fiction info on MagicDragon's 30 MB domain at http://www.magicdragon.com/.
And be sure to check out some other resources:

MAGAZINES WITH WEB SITES
On the SFWA (Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America) website, the Links to Magazines page has a lot of interesting entries - including some not listed here
Other good sites are:
Analog Science Fiction and Fact (my own alma mater of sorts) is now online with columns, history, and information. A superb magazine where science (though not necessarily nuts and bolts) still matters, Analog is the longest continuously (almost) published science fiction magazine with fiction, fact and reviews. A new, slightly larger size allows for more content on less pages so everyone wins. And since this has been my best market, I'd be remiss if I didn't try to get you to subscribe.
Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine
"Although we're based in Australia we welcome submissions from all
countries. We submit every issue to reviewers at Locus, SF Crowsnest, Tangent
and more, and also to several Year's Best anthologies. We're reviewed regularly
by many of them. Getting published in ASIM does not mean your fiction will only
be seen by a handful of wallabies in outback Australia "
Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine is also online with excerpts, columns, features and more. A sister magazine to Analog, this excellent magazine shares an editorial type-of-content range, but with a different flavor unique to its editor. Like Analog, a new, slightly larger size allows for more content on less pages so everyone wins.
Jim Baen's Universe is an online magazine paying seriously professional rates!
Locus online. Online site for this mainstay magazine with news, reviews, resources, and perspectives on Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror.
On-Spec, More than just Science Fiction, (new web site) is a quarterly Canadian magazine of speculative fiction.
the Pedestal Magazine at http://www.thepedestalmagazine.com/ is a polished online magazine paying pro rates for original multi-genre work
Planet Magazine is a "...FREE, award-winning electronic quarterly of short science fiction, fantasy, poetry, horror, and humor written by new writers. Our goal is to encourage budding authors and to just have fun..":
For other electronic magazines check out the SF Site page on magazines.

ONLINE BOOK STORES
In addition to the below, a good start is FetchBook.Info is an excellent site where you enter Book Title, ISBN or Author to search 60-some book seller sites for the best prices.
As for online bookstore sites, check out:
AllDirect.com offers books and movies
With around 2.5 million titles, Amazon, at http://www.amazon.com, is probably the largest book store in the world, and if there is ANY book in print you want, this can be the place to go. Rated #5 in Time magazine's "Best Websites of 1996", you can go here to search by author, title, or subject, and you can also read and even post reviews. 40% off on best sellers, 20-40% off on "staff favorites", and 10% off on the rest. Shipping and handling at $3 + 95 cents/book with 3 day delivery. It has excellent search tools, and easy links to science fiction and fantasy books -- best sellers and lesser-known. It is also more graphic now. And now, Amazon has added movies and more to its inventory.
And another giant book store has just joined the net: Barnes and Noble athttp://www.BarnesandNoble.com has around 1.5 million titles to date, and also has easy links to science fiction and fantasy books. A bit more graphically oriented than all of Amazon, it also has other areas such as chats, joke boards and more. Shipping prices are the same as Amazon, and next-business-day delivery is coming for more than 400,000 titles. Prices are a bit better on non best-sellers, with 30% off hard covers and 20% off paperbacks.
BiggerBooks.com offers any category desired

SCIENCE FOR SCIENCE FICTION
Note: This section will be gradually added to as I come across appropriate material. I welcome suggestions via E-Mail. Sites I want to add will be those which are useful to writers wishing to make their writing more scientifically accurate, and folks simply wishing to improve their understanding of sciences underlying good science fiction (blame this on my long association with the editor of Analog Science fiction and Fact).
AllRefer.com is an incredible one stop page to research anything
Artemis Society - This site at http://www.asi.org is technically not a science fiction site, but this is the main page for the Artemis Society and their very real plans for a commercial return to the Moon -- and not too long ago this regrettably would have been a science fiction idea. This page is proof that the dream is NOT dead, and in fact is close to being realized, and it is ripe for fiction based in fact. Now if we can just get the Mars exploration going the same way! But fortunately, recent findings have stirred up interest in Mars again and prospects for a serious exploration of the Red Planet are looking better and better -- though the recent loss of the Russian Mars expedition will handicap things a bit.
Astronomy Picture of the Day "...Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer." Amazing pictures!
Speaking of astronomy pictures. Canstockphoto has excellent Astronomy pictures. Below the lizard click in the window under "Search for Your Images!" and enter astronomy for 3,062 images.
Asteroid K is English version of a site from a Finnish writer which has a Superb Links Page with real science (scroll down to "World Building and Hard Science")
Bad Astronomy "...The Bad Astronomy web pages are devoted to airing out myths and misconceptions in astronomy and related topics..." And be aure to check out the Links page
Celestia is an incredibly realistic and controllable tour of space - and it can be down-loaded for free!
Hubble Site has loads of Hubbl,e-related info and images
FotoSearch which has a wide range of genre-relevant images at: Astronomy Images & Graphics
Information Please is a one-stop resource on all sorts of information, including: Space and Space Web Sites.
Lunar Resources Company - Also associated with the Artemis Society, the Lunar Resources Company at http://www.tlrc.com is the nuts and bolts end of the coming commercial utilization of the Moon.
Robert A. Metzger is a writer of SCIENCE fiction who has an excellent links page which includes a wide number of informative sites for research.
Nanotechnology Now is an excellent comprehensive site on the science that science fiction writers need to understand - not improvise! And Nanotechnology Basics is their page on just that. A good pair of resources. And for a directory of more nanotech sites than you can imagine, go to dmoz Open Directory's Nanotechnology Page
NASA and NASA Space Link, is "An Aeronautics and Space Resource for Educators Since 1988." These sites are full of resources and information (the NASA sites uses Flash and takes a little time to load but is worth it). Also check the NASA Human Space Flight Link
Ned Wright's Cosmology Tutorial "...Cosmology is the study of the origin, current state, and future of our Universe. This field has been revolutionized by many discoveries made during the past century. My cosmology tutorial is an attempt to summarize these discoveries..." (Available also in French & Italian)
The Nine Planets: A Multimedia Tour of the Solar System. Check this site out! This is "...an overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific knowledge of each of the planets and moons in our solar system. Each page has text and images, some have sounds and movies, most provide references to additional related information. Interplanetary spacecraft have revolutionized planetary science. Very little of this document would have been possible without the space program."
Physlink, the Ultimate Physics Resource has loads of information on physics through links, journals, theories -- and who'da thunk it: Fun! A collection of hilarious cartoons, jokes and more.
Refdesk.com If you can't find it here, it may not exist! Hyperbole, but this site brings together an incredible wealth of reference resources, information, and tools to find more..Science Information Resources This is a comprehensive one stop resource
Science Fiction Writers Resource Encyclopedia is an excellent, still evolving, resource combining links and articles on both the genre and the science necessary for writers striving for scientific accuracy. Click on "Astronomy" for some good links
