What is MPD/DID?
Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), or Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), is a condition
in which the sufferer uses dissociation to mentally remove himself/herself from situations of
trauma and/or anxiety. Widely used by children during developmental years as a natural
mechanism to cope with anxiety, dissociation can continue into adulthood as a chronic defense
mechanism that can lead to serious dysfunction in work, social and daily activities, Many
individuals with MPD/DID have endured repetitive, overwhelming, and often life-threatening
trauma during childhood. MPD/DID is one of five Dissociative Disorders identified in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual IV.
