Fex 1111

Fex 1111

Heinrich Müller outdid himself with this car and called it the Hell-Racer. First produced in 1946, the FEX 1111 was one of the first, totally new Schuco models after the war. It shared body styles with the post-war Jaguar 1250 and the Kommando Anno 2000.

Fex allowed many varied play possibilities. Set the steering for a tight circle, pull out the SOS lever, and the car will cut a crazy circle, flipping over on its long axis, landing on its wheels and caroming on! Set the steering straight, push SOS lever in, and Fex will drive slowly. In the same steering setting, pull the SOS lever out, and Fex will scream down the pike!

Flipping the Fex is not an easy task even with A new reproduction model. On most surfaces the rear wheels can not get enough tracking causing them to spin out and unwind without picking up enough speed to flip. I used A thin rubber mat (like the ones used to hold down rugs), wound'er up good and let'er rip. Once getting it to flip twice. The rubber mat not only provided enough traction but protected the Fex from scratches while flipping. I used the Fex in the top photo on this page, an original.

This leads us on to another feature of the Fex. If you lift the drive wheels of A key wind toy auto, as the Fex does when it flips, you will notice that the wind winds down rapidley, A few seconds and the wind is gone. The Fex's design fixes this with an Off-On device located under the car between the rear wheels. When the fex flips the device keeps the Fex wound. Likewise when you lift the car or hold it for winding the mechanism keeps the clockwork wound. The Fex shares this feature with several other Schucos.

You can also use Fex with the Schuco Garage for up to fifteen more interesting drives! (Thats what it says, see instructions)

: Footnote
I've read in a few places that the Fex 1111 is noted as "The first, totally new Schuco model after the war". Indeed from the windshield on back the Fex 1111 looks the same as the pre war Kommando Anno 2000, the pre war Garage Auto 1750, and the pre war Jaguar 1250. Its steering is the same as the others and the Fex has a functioning rear bumper like the others, although thay have different functionalities. So as I see it, the Fex 1111 was not "totally new" but A refinement of many of there previous toys.

Reissue
The Fex 1111 was reissued and is currently being produced under the Schuco trademark. I'm not sure but I think the reissue can be identified by its bottom plate which bears no "Made in" markings. The graphics on the reissued box is also ever so slightly different. See Photo of Boxes Side by Side.
