This two-tone Radio 5000 is considered by many the Holy Grail of Schuco's. This car with its box sold at auction for $1.348.00 on June 17, 2000 (see the high quality pic by clicking on any pic). The Radio 5000 was one of Schuco's first models. It was also the least produced of there regular production models. It sported A Thorns music box, hence the name Radio, which was turned on and off by the long spring like knob running along the top of the car. (Click on the Pic for A collage of photos of this Radio 5000 and its box 360K)

The spring along the top is most often found bent and unsprung. In the pic you can see A slight bend in the spring just past the first support, This spring is in the best condition of any I have ever seen (I have seen few, there are not many of these). The music box was wound seperatly on the bottom of the car (see pic) with A standard music box shaft. Later model Radios would use the same key as the clockwork and remain on the bottom. I do not know which tune(s) the Radio 5000s played, the later models also had Thorn's music boxes and played several different tunes, the title of which was identified by A sticker on the outside of the box.

The 5000 came in solid colors and Two-Tone, with the Two-Tone being the most desirable. The Radio 5000 came in what I know as A "Harmonica Box" and this example is typical (again, the best I have ever seen). I shall always regret not bidding higher (I stopped at $375.00) on this stunning Schuco, for some things are worth more than money.
