This book can be described as the 'bible' on the topic of
Bridge's life and works, and Mr Hindmarsh may be rightly
regarded as foremost 'high priest' and guardian of Bridge's
creative output. As a music editor, he has also brought to
light many of Bridge's hitherto unpublished works.
No music library can afford to be without this book.
Mr Hindmarsh is, at present, with BBC Radio 3.
This book, written by composer Payne, is a descriptive and
analytical survey of Bridge's creative achievement, including
numerous musical illustrations. The work is divided into
sections:
1) early chamber music; 2) first orchestral works;
3) middle period; 4) years of transition;
5) final harvest; and 6) final orchestral works.
There are, scattered throughout the book, a few photos,
most depicting Bridge in private life.
Publisher G Schirmer provides a
biography of
Anthony Payne - composer and critic.
Payne has been the author of liner notes accompanying many recordings
of Bridge's works, but this volume is the ultimate Bridge CD companion.
Particularly if you can read music, this book is for you.
Allow Mr Payne's experience and insight be your guide to
richer enjoyment.
As of Aug '97, this clothbound book was a mere £7.50 at the
Internet Bookshop (England).
A revised edition (August 1997) has just been issued, bringing
the bibliography up-to-date. As for the discography, more
ephemeral publications like Schwann's Opus may better
serve your practical needs.
This work is most valuable for its exhaustive bibliography
of works and articles about Bridge, spanning the entire century.
The commentary makes quite interesting reading, as the Reader
acquires an unfolding sense of Bridge's life.
The book opens an exceptional, concise 10-page essay summarising
Bridge's life and achievements.
If you are here investigating the music of Bridge, this must
surely be a book of interest and value to you. I need not
say much more. Don't miss it.
