I think anyone who thinks about science and scientists of the Industrial Revolution has to
consider Nikola Tesla as if not THE greatest, one of the greatest thinkers and inventors
of the late 19th and early 20th Century. During that time, many of the so-called
inventors were merely entrepreneurs. They hired great thinking people and took credit for
their work. Not taking anything away from Edison, he did have hundreds of people working
for him in order to invent the electric light. He also "electrified" New York City so
people could use his lightbulb. He did however have a very simplistic view of
electricity and used his notariety to try to convince the world to use his DC (Direct Current)
form of electricity.
Nikola Tesla, was a thinker. He invented AC (Alternating Current) and a way to generate it while working for George Westinghouse. This allowed the transmission of electricity for very long distances and didn't need a generation station every 5 miles or so. AC is also much safer than DC. Tesla also worked on a way to transmit power through the air, and to transmit it world wide. This shows that he spent all of his time on an invention and how it would benefit mankind while spending no time at all on how it can become a profitable venture. The world has changed due to Nicola Tesla. It also has changed it's additude toward inventors. We, the general public, are now hearing the names of the actual inventors as well as their benefactors. This is a good thing as we are once again teaching the world that one person with an idea, can indeed change the world. Tesla did! |
