Good Books

"Until last year I would take in each new season of shows just as you do -- passively lying on a couch, mouth agape, marveling at the subtleties of Dweebs. As a tubular amateur, I'd be utterly dumbfounded each fall by how much crap there was on the air. Now I'm a bona fide professional TV critic with a professional point of view. I watch in bulk, judging each series according to 57 distinct criteria, analyzing its historical context and handicapping its chances for success. For your protection, I do so while sitting in a sterile, climate-controlled, publicist-free atmosphere with charts and graphs for reference.

And after all that effort, here's what I've learned: I still can't believe how much crap there is on the air."

-- Rolling Stone TV critic David Wild, from the article Television: The Crap Is Out There, Sept. 19, 1996.

"I must say I find television very educational. The minute somebody turns it on I go into the library and read a good book."

--Julius "Groucho" Marx
