SHELTER
STARS
Welcome to our Shelter Stars page
Shelter Stars is sponsorship program for our permanent residents. All of are permanents are here due to illness or behaviour problems.
Shelter Stars gives people the chance to help out Philly Ferrets in a big way. Your sponsorship will help defer the cost of surgeries, medications, vet visits and medical tests and lupron treatments. None of our ferrets wait for medical care, so please don't misunderstand the programs agenda.
Sponsors will receive a picture and regular updates on how their ferret is doing and of course our heartfelt appreciation. Updates can be done by e-mail or regular mail. Sponsorship is $5.00 a month and you can continue as long as you like and stop whenever you feel the need to. Towards the end of the page some new ferrets have been added. Please take the time to consider sponsoring a shelter star.
If you would like to be a sponsor or have any questions or concerns please feel free to e-mail us.
FAITH & LUCI

She is a 5 year old Marshall Farms sable. Faith came in with
her sister Hope in Oct. of 97 .She enjoys running through tunnels and chasing
Luci. Faith is a very active girl who likes medication time. She pushes
Luci out of the way to make sure she gets her share. They both love Duck
Soup. Faith will chase any ferret she sees but hates to be chased herself.
Luci is a 5 year old chocolate. She was dropped off to our shelter because
her family was moving and the new apartment did not accept pets. Her canines
were filed down long ago due to her jaw being crooked. She loves to climb
in your lap and fall asleep. She is a demanding little girl and will scratch
at you foot or leg to be paid attention too. She is a pretty active ferret
and enjoys chasing and wrestling with Faith.
Faith and Luci underwent adrenal/insulinoma surgery the week on November 12, 1998. Luci also had a mast cell tumor removed. Both girls are recovering really well and they have more energy than they have had in a long time and we are hoping that with winter coming their coats may come back.
On February 7th 1999 Faith and Luci started participating in Dr. Anna Edling's Lupron study. The girls will be getting monthly injections of lupron to see if this will prompt hair growth and allow Faith's vulva to shrink. Both girls after surgery lost more hair and Faith's vulva never went down. We did try Drenamin (mentioned in the FML) with no success.
*UPDATE*
Faith we are going to be putting Faith back on the Lupron study. Her health appears to be in decline. Our cet is also going to look into Dr. Weiss's new protocol to see if we could try this instead. Faith's now completely blind. Luci still continues to be energetic and will chase others.
AMY
Amy is a 3 year old silver ferret. She arrived at the shelter in July of 1998. She was rescued by a nice women from a friends house. Amy was left in a basement all day to run around and never received much attention or proper care. The lady could see Amy needed veterinary care so she took her and paid for Amy's adrenal surgery and the removal of a tumor on the tip of her tail. Sadly the lady could not keep her so we took her in. Amy is deaf and bites to get your attention. She had improved a great deal and has grown all her hair back and has put on a great deal of weight. Amy does seem to like other ferrets but she gets upset fairly quickly. Amy does not like to use a litter pan despite all of our trying. We are hoping to put her with possibly Annie & Nadia. She loves playing and chasing us. She likes to play in the tunnel and with stuffed animals. She loves to sleep curled up in her hammock.
*UPDATE*
Amy is starting to lose hair again. She continues
to be very playful and loving and loves her Cheerios. She will be visiting
our vet in July for to see if she is a good surgical candidate if not then
we may put her on the lupron study as well.
ANASTASIA, BONNIE, JAKE, JERRY
Annie is a three year old ferret who was a transfer from a animal
shelter. Her nickname was Ana sceptic Annie. Every time you handled her
you were bitten. They said she was part of a group of animals that were
seized from a farm due to lack of proper care. She has improved greatly
since she had been here and occasionally she will bite you only if she
gets really excited and if your not looking likes to bite your feet. She
has grown quite attached to Nadia one of our Fredonia ferrets. Annie has
done wonders for Nadia's shyness. Annie loves to chase her and pounce on
her.
Bonnie is a 5 year old sable. Her brother Byron passed away after
having surgery last year and she had a very difficult time adjusting she
was very depressed and only wanted me or Mike to hold her. She finally
grew to like Squiggy & Jake only to have Squiggy pass away a short
time later. We were able to move them in with Annie & Nadia.
Bonnie is a sweet girl who loves to be held and chase the other ferrets.
She loves to curl up with Nadia. Bonnie came to us from Morris Animal Refuge.
Jake was turned into our shelter. His owner no longer wanted him.
Jake is now almost 5 years old and loves the girls. His favorite sleeping
buddy is Bonnie. Jake is a very active ferret who loves his Cheerios and
is very affectionate. He loves to play but will not hesitate to beat up
on the younger boys if they get too rough. He loves to chase the younger
boys though the tubes and likes to play in plastic bags.
Jerry came with his brother Ben from Morris Animal Refuge. Ben and
Jerry were both 4-5 at the time. They did not have names when they came
to us but quickly learned the ones we gave them. Sadly Ben passed away
from renal failure after fighting a long battle. We had been letting Jerry
out with other ferrets to play to begin to prepare him in the event of
Ben's passing. Ben took a turn for the worse suddenly and we all were not
prepared. Jerry is taking Ben's passing very hard.
BOBO, RICKY, SKEETER & ZIGGY
Bobo is a sable girl, a transfer from another shelter who is undergoing
bite rehab. We have made some progress with her. She is learning to play
with other ferrets. We are hoping she will get better because she is such
a cute ferret and quite a bundle of energy. Her favourite thing in life
is to stick her head out from under the couch, bite your feet and hide
back under the couch.
Bobo really enjoys living with the boys. Their rough and tumble
style is right for her. She loves to run and chase them and all four are
a joy to watch when they are out to play. She still bites you if you hold
her too long and of course when she feels you are doing something unpleasant
to her such as cleaning her ears or clipping her nails. She loves to stick
her head up though the sides of a chair or couch and bite you then hide
again.
Ricky had adrenal surgery last year and and had one removed and
the other debulked he also had a large inslet tumor removed. He occasionally
shows signs of aggression and since path results said it was adencarinoma
& insulnoma usually does reoccur he has been taking off our adoption
list. Ricky is a fun loving ferret who really enjoys his cagemates and
playing rough. He really likes to grab and tug and fight with his paws,
his speciality is scratching and can be quite tough to take on.
Skeeter is healthy but since he & Ricky have been together all
their lives we can not separate them. Skeeter is a great ferret who is
a little bit more mild than Ricky. He loves playing and chasing him in
the tube and playing with Ziggy.
Ziggy has been adopted out twice and both times he has returned
to the shelter. He does not adjust well t his new homes and will not play
or eat and cries at night and both times we had to insist he be brought
back here. Upon returning he quickly returns to himself once he was around
the gang. He obviously considers this home and Ricky, Skeeter & Bobo
his lifelong friends.
OONA,
DONER, SHADOW & MERLIN
Oona, Doner, Shadow & Merlin are all 5-6 years of age and came
to us from Morris Animal Refuge. oona is a very petite sable. Shadow is
a sable. Merlin is a chocolate mitt and Doner is a very pretty chocolate.
They did have another cagemate that the owner said got thinner and
thinner and then died. Her landlord found out she had ferrets and had to
get rid of them. Your never happy to see ferrets in a shelter but I feel
they are better off.
I felt so badly for these guys when they came in. They are very
thin and their fur was matted and dirty with dried feces. It was caked
hard around their nails and feet. It took us a week to get it off slowly
so not to tear the skin or nails. We still are unsure as to who Merlin
& Doner are since neither respond to either name. So were are working
on this. The ferrets were obviously not let out much and get tired pretty
quickly and are not used to being held and someone being loving and affectionate
to them. When I kiss them they swung their heads around to see what I was
doing and Doner bit me in the face. Doner still continues to bite me but
not Mike his former owner was a girl so I'm guessing he did not like her
much. Doner is starting to follow me around and does not bite me all the
time and the other will climb in my lap to be cuddled and kissed. They
all have been to the vet already and Oona will have insulinoma surgery
once she is in better shape and Merlin may be having the beginning of an
adrenal problem.
Watch here for further updates and pictures to be posted soon.
SIMI, NONI
& ROSIE
Simi, Noni & Rosie are between the ages of 5-6. They spent all
their lives with one owner who loved them very much but her building found
out she had them and she had to give them up. Simi is a really beautiful
black sable and is apparently healthy and very active. He loves playing
with other ferrets, even younger ones. Noni is a really sweet silver mitt
who loves to be held and gives kisses. Rosie is a male chocolate a big
and sweet boy with lots of energy. Noni likes other ferrets as long as
they don't get too rough. All three ferrets arrived at the shelter the
first week on July so we are still getting to know them and have a vet
appointment the second week in July. Noni has an enlarged vulva and will
be evaluate for possible adrenal surgery and Rosie is very aggressive towards
Simi and is acting the we have seen male ferrets with adrenal problems
act so he also will be evaluated for surgery. Watch here for updates and
pictures coming soon.
If you would like more information on these ferrets
please fell free to e-mail us.
