While the L1 is a big machine,
it is not just for large diameter work. We've all seen the pictures of the lathe with the monster bowl being turned. So rather than re-hash that image, I want you to see some views of turning a modest size walnut blank. Note that I am starting with a very minimally roughed non-round half-log! The span across the wide part of the flat surface is only 11". But look at the available space around the chuck and work area. Note that the tail stock, if needed, could actually slide OVER the toolrest!
