Siege Tanks are an excellent ground assult and defensive weapon. As with any unit, getting the upgrade(s) - especially later in the game is essential. Proper placement of Tanks [in either mode] is important to getting the most hit points.
It is easy to build many SCV's, get lot's of minerals and gas coming in, then build an army of units. But it is just as easy to plow all that dough right into the wrong type of enemy unit. The result is always the same - a total loss for YOU! When you do that, just tell yourself one thing - "At least I freed up some of my Supply Depots"! Any experienced player knows that losing some units is just part of the game, but we want to minimize those losses. Some helpful strategies that I have found are: Never attack from below! If you have to shoot at something on a plateau, expect greater loss than the enemy above. Always pair complementary units. With Seige Tanks or Vultures, they are sitting ducks for air attacks! Do not leave them unprotected from the air - always keep them near Marines, Missle Turrets, or other air fire-power! Goliaths have been made more powerful with the release of BROOD WAR. Definitely work them into your build order! |
Vultures are probably the most fun unit of them all. They don't cost a lot, and when you get the Spider Mine upgrade from the Machine Shop, you can place 3 mines [each Vulture] anywhere you want! They are buried, so the enemy can walk right on top of them, releasing tons of explosive damage to the surrounding area. They can be detected by the ComSat Station, but they are still a great tool to use. They can not only fustrate your enemy, but scare them, and let you know right where they are! If you get this unit early in the game, place mines near all mineral patches, and all places your foe may walk.
The screenshot to the right shows an example of using Spider Mines. |

Note: 3 shields and 3 weapons makes an attack effective.
Also Note: Two Armories allow for faster upgrading.
