The Ultralisk is a mighty, powerful unit that uses it's enormous tusks to destroy it's enemy. It's tough exterior can withstand 400 hitpoints of damage, so it is definitely one of more effective land attack units. As all advanced units, it cost plenty of gas/minerals, so several bases must be drawing adequate income for this beast to be created in numbers.
After the Queen's Nest is mutated, and once your Lair is upgraded to the Hive [final stage of the Hatchery mutation], the 4 most advanced Zerg mutations can be morphed: the Defiler Mound, the Nydus Canal, the Ultralisk Cavern, and the Greater Spire (Greater Spire not shown). The screenshot to the left shows the Wooly Mammoth-like Ultralisks next to thier Cavern, above that is the mysterious Nydus Canal - which allows instant transporting from creep to creep - further above to the right is the Defiler Mound with it's scorpion-like Defilers awaiting battle. |
Illustration: To the right, we see one Ultralisk against one Sunken Colony. A pretty straight-forward fight, at 400 hit points, the Ultralisk will win hands-down.
Note: In the BROOD WAR expansion, there are upgrades for this unit. |
The Defiler is an advanced unit that has a lot of biological tricks up it's sleeve. Knowing how to use each ability is essential to winning against other races. Shown to the left is a Dark Swarm cloud released into an enemy attack. Both parties were destroyed in this encounter, but when used properly, the Dark Swarm can 'create a thick cloud of living insects to distract the Swarm's enemies and provide cover for other breeds'. |
Another of the Defiler's abilities is the Plague [see illustration at right]. With this ability, the Defiler produces a batch of corrosive spores that it then explosively projects in a dense cloud around it's enemies. This highly toxic cloud corrodes anything caught within it's midst.
Consume - The Defiler can also evolve a consume ability. It can feed off it's own species to regain lost energy. Metasynaptic Node - this mutation increases the rate at which bio-toxins are secreted. All of these abilities need to be evolved at the Defiler Mound. This unit is difficult to master (and pretty discusting too!), but can be compared to the Queen's biological warefare tactics. |
