World Media Ignore Attacks Against Israel
Israel National News 2/25/02
Although Palestinian terrorism and other attacks against Israeli targets continue at the rate of roughly one an hour, one would be hard-pressed to know this from the world media. Neither CNN nor BBC discuss the Arab violence in their Middle East stories today [this was written before the murder of two Israelis this afternoon near Tekoa], other than a mention of an Arab woman killed by soldiers in the course of her attempt to stab them. CNN's Jerrold Kessel even blamed the lack of peace progress in the area not on the incessant Palestinian attacks but rather on Israel's decision not to allow Arafat to leave Ramallah: "[There is] an understanding that the two sides would do their very best to limit hostilities during the next few days... But now the hopes that this would merge with something grander than that perhaps [has been put] into question by this latest Israeli decision on the reassertion of Israel's continued control and limitation of Yasser Arafat's travel movements."
The attacks that, as of this writing, CNN and BCC readers would not know about include the following: A teen-aged boy was wounded and taken to a Be'er Sheva hospital in moderate-to-serious condition when Arab terrorists shot at a car south of Hevron late this morning. Three other persons in the vehicle were not hurt, while the boy, a resident of Hevron, was shot in the back. Tzippy Shapira, the driver, told Arutz-7, "The bullets came from the car behind me, and I immediately began speeding away as fast as I could to Moshav Carmel, where the medics began to treat him." She said that after a few seconds of shooting, cars and trucks showed up and the Arabs then turned off towards the village of Yata. Asked if she was still shaking, she said, "I wasn't shaking even before. I'm rather feeling angry at the situation, and thankful to G-d for the miracle that only one of us was hurt, and praying that this situation will soon end."
Military sources report that over the past four days, over 200 grenades were thrown at IDF positions in southern Gaza along the border to Egypt... Last night, an Arab woman attempted to stab soldiers at the Taiba Checkpoint, east of Netanya. She did not stop even when soldiers shouted at her to stop and fired warning shots in the air; they were forced to fire at the attacker, killing her.
Arab attacks on soldiers since last night included shooting at an army position near Har Brachah, an army jeep south of Jerusalem's Abu Dis neighborhood, a military vehicle near Ein Arik, and soldiers near Shechem... Arabs fired many rounds at the Gilo neighborhood in Jerusalem last night; IDF soldiers returned fire The Tunnels Highway between Jerusalem and Gush Etzion was closed twice last night, and once this morning, following terrorist gunfire Three bombs were detonated in the Admat Yeshai neighborhood of Hevron PLO gunmen opened fire on an IDF position on the Israeli border with Egypt, near Rafiach. There were no reports of injuries... Kokhav Yaakov, between Psagot and Jerusalem, entered the list of targets last night when terrorists opened fire towards the town; no one was hurt... Terror victim Valerie Achmir, who was murdered on Friday near Atarot, was buried this afternoon. Formerly a doctor from the former Soviet Union, he worked as a security guard in the Atarot Industrial Zone until PLO terrorists ended his life with shots to the head and neck.
An improvement has been noted in the condition of several of those wounded in the Karnei Shomron attack over a week ago. However, Rachel Thaler (Rachel Donna bat Gittel Chaya) and Shira Chazan (Shira bat Yaffa) are still in critical condition.
The woman soldier Hila Lustig, 20, who was critically wounded in the Be'er Sheva terrorist assault two weeks ago, came out of her coma on Friday. She was removed from the emergency ward and is now being treated in the surgical ward.
