Israel Protects Murderer of American

On the morning of October 2 the Today Show on NBC TV, showed a clip about a man who murdered someone in the US and then fled to Israel. According to the announcer, Israel refuses to extradite him to the United States because Israeli law does not allow extradition of people whose parents are Jewish. Different people on the street were interviewed saying he shouldn't be able to escape to Israel and he should be punished for it. The announcer said that according to Israeli Law he could be allowed out in 16 years.

NBC made Israel look like a country that protects murderers of Americans and allows them to go free. The irony of this is America is a country that lets it's own murderers go free and murder again. The murderer is much more likely to stay locked up in an Israeli jail than in an American one. Another mystery is why NBC has no problem with the Arab terrorists who murdered Americans and who the PLO has refused to extradite to the United States. NBC has no problem with the fact that Arafat himself gave commands for the execution of Americans.

Why did Israel pass a law barring extradition of Jews to foreign countries? Was it to protect Jewish murderers? Or was it to protect innocent Jews unjustly accused of crimes? My guess is the latter.

JUSTICE MINISTRY COMMENTS ON SHEINBEIN CASE (Communicated by the Justice Ministry Spokeswoman)

The State Prosecutor's Office today (Wednesday) 1.10.97 clarified that the citizenship of Shmuel David Sheinbein, accused of murder, is being carefully checked. Israel is not a refuge for criminals, and if it transpires that Sheinbein was an Israeli citizen at the time that he is alleged to have committed his crime, and may therefore not be extradited, he will stand trial in Israel. In the meantime, preparatory measures are being taken to bring Sheinbein to trial, following his arrest and interrogation. In addition, his father and brother have been arrested on suspicion of obstructing the course of justice.

The authorities in Israel are fully co-operating with their American counterparts. Two prosecutors and two police officers are expected to arrive from Washington on Sunday, to help Israeli police with the investigation into this matter.

The Justice Ministry wishes to stress that a proposal for an amendment in the law affecting extradition is currently in the final stages of preparation in the Ministry, the objective of which will be to make possible the extradition of Israeli citizens for trial in foreign countries, on the condition that they serve their sentences afterwards in Israel.

Did Israel really deserve to be portrayed by NBC as a protector of murderers of American citizens?
